The Applied Dynamics Laboratory

The Applied Dynamics Laboratory conducts interdisciplinary research across a variety of theoretical, computational, and experimental platforms. Members have collaborated with experimental dynamicists, computational mechanicians, computer engineers, biomechanicians, electrical engineers, applied mathematicians, anthropologists, entomologists, climate geographers, and educational and cognitive psychologists.

Graduates work at institutions of higher learning, major technology companies, aircraft and equipment manufacturers, consulting firms, and software developers.

Opportunities for Collaboration

To join the Applied Dynamics Laboratory as an undergraduate, graduate, of postdoctoral researcher, please contact Harry Dankowicz directly.

You are also invited to reach out if you are interested in collaborating on an area of current interest to members of the group, e.g., adaptive control algorithms for control-based continuation, uncertainty quantification in problems with delay, characterization of time-dependent network dynamics, design optimization of floating wind turbines, path planning for soft manipulators, and modeling of emergent behavior in insect societies.

Software Development

Members of the Applied Dynamics Laboratory contribute to the development of new computational software to aid in their and others' research. Prominent examples include the parameter continuation platform COCO and the multibody dynamics modeling and analysis package MAMBO and the MAMBO toolbox.

An introduction to COCO and the theory behind its design is included in the advanced textbook "Recipes for Continuation" and through a series of online video tutorials. The software release contains extensive additional documentation, including tutorials for production-ready toolboxes.

“A diffeomorphism with a hyperbolic fixed point, and a nontrivial, transversal intersection of the corresponding stable and unstable manifolds, has a hyperbolic invariant set on which it is topologically equivalent to a subshift of finite type.” - The Smale-Birkhoff Homoclinic Theorem

Some thoughts on life-long learning

Understanding is not knowledge. Knowledge is not wisdom. When you begin to apply, when you begin to integrate, you may see connections that nobody has seen before. The 90% perspiration that make success comes from a life-long pursuit of a higher vantage point.

Some thoughts on work habits

Don't spend your day cleaning your desk. Keep your eyes on the ball, on the goals you set out for yourself for each day, and allocate time for the big ones. You will always find time for cleaning your desk, but save some energy for the more challenging tasks.
